My 30 (or more!) days challenges

Day 30 – Inspired by Whatever I Want

ruflag

You probably guessed it, didn’t you? I’m so sick of makeup now, that I am not using any at all!

???????????????????????????????

And this is the end of this challenge, which I generally enjoyed, despite a few times when I really had to force myself. I haven’t become a super makeup pro, but I could certainly say that I managed to improve some skills. So well done to me on this, and I feel fully ready for new challenges!

Day 29 – Inspired by Holiday

ruflag

I wasn’t feeling inspired by any particular holiday, when thinking over today’s makeup, so decided on a general holiday makeup, if I could call it so. What does it mean? Well, holiday makeup primarily means glow and glitter, although, of course, you don’t want your face to be too shiny, and neither do you want it to remind of a disco ball. So after nearly a month of mattifying my face every day, today I’m finally going to attempt at a dewy look!

???????????????????????????????

I’ve found a couple of Caudalie product testers at home which I am now going to use. As the first step to a dewy look is a nicely moisturised skin, I start with the Radiance Serum and apply it all over my face.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then there is this tinted moisturiser, which I’ll be substituting for foundation. It comes in two colours: light to medium and medium to dark. I go for the former, but it looks a bit dark on my skin (which, mind you, is definitely not the palest ever!) and also has a slightly orange tint to it. It leaves me wondering how the medium to dark one would look… But on the positive side, it does give that glowing dewy effect.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Not all of the face has to glow, though, so I apply compact powder onto my nose, my chin and the middle of my forehead.

???????????????????????????????

To amplify the glow even further, I replace blush with pink lip colour, for its creamy texture. I only apply it on the apples of my cheeks.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

And then I use some of the weird white lip colour as highlighter for my cheekbones.

???????????????????????????????

Now it’s time to do the eyes, and I start with applying a shimmering champagne-coloured eyeshadow on the whole under-brow area right until the crease line.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then a darker shimmering colour is applied to the upper half of the mobile eyelid.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Next I take some shimmering light pink eyeshadow and apply it on the inner part of the top eyelid.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

For the outer part I use a darker pink colour with a touch of purple.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then I take a silvery eye pencil and outline the whole eye with it.

???????????????????????????????

A black eyepencil is used for the waterline.

???????????????????????????????

Now this combination of a black line inside and a silver one outside makes my eyes look really small, so to correct this a bit I draw the black pencil on top of the silver line, not hiding it completely, but rather creating a blend of two colours.

???????????????????????????????

After applying mascara I’m ready to move to the lips. I am using a very bright pink colour and first I dip the brush in it very slightly and outline the lips.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then I fill them in, using really LOTS of the product, so that it looks pretty much like a lacquer.

???????????????????????????????

And now I’m done. The makeup looks ok, though I wouldn’t call it the most impressive one I’ve ever done. I wish I’d used creamy eyeshadows, for example, which I certainly would have if I had them in those colours.

Day 28 – Inspired by Movie

ruflag

Today I am going to do the makeup of Cleopatra played by Elizabeth Taylor because a) it is interesting and unusual b) it looks nice rather than scary like in many movies and c) it seems relatively easy to do.

elizabeth-taylor-cleopatra1-e1397839433553

And by the way, I’ve never seen the actual movie, but I don’t think it is a big problem.

???????????????????????????????

So I’m keeping it easy and starting with my face makeup routine.

Right after that I’m moving to the eyes, and keeping it simple too. See this bright blue eyeshadow? I apply it literally everywhere – on the eyelid, under the eyebrow, making sure that the outer border of the blue colour is a sharp straight line connecting the corner of the eye with the edge of the eyebrow.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then I make a very thick line with the eyeliner over the upper lashes, aligning it with the eyeshadow border and extending it till the eyebrow edge. From the edge of the eyebrow I then draw a shorter line as the extension of the brow itself, and then a third one back to the corner of the eye. I fill in the resulting shape with the liner.

???????????????????????????????

For my waterline I use a white eyepencil.

???????????????????????????????

And then I draw another eyeliner line right under the white one and connect it with the strange shape.

???????????????????????????????

Next I apply some glitter dust on the top eyelid, not too densely for the blue colour to show through. The eyes are nearly done, I only need add a little bit of mascara.

???????????????????????????????

Coming to the lips, they have to look really nude here, so I cover them in foundation cream and concealer. But then I also add some light-pink lip colour, otherwise my lips look weird when they are the same colour as my skin.

???????????????????????????????

And here is Cleopatra for you! I am quite happy with the result, I think I managed well. I couldn’t be bothered to do something with my hair too to make it look more Cleopatra-like – I don’t even have a fringe to start with!

Day 27 – Inspired by season

ruflag

Undoubtedly, the season that has got the most beautiful colours is autumn. So when I thought about which season to select, this was a no-brainer. I am doing an autumn makeup!

???????????????????????????????

The face makeup is done as usual, only with peach-colour blush. Then I do my eyebrows – I think I’ve mentioned that I don’t usually touch them, but I liked yesterday’s makeup so much that I really want to fill them in with the same brown liner, only this time not altering the shape. I have to mention that the lines look much sharper this time.

???????????????????????????????

Again, just as yesterday, I cover the top eyelid with brown eyeshadow and apply a shimmering white one under the eyebrow.

???????????????????????????????

Then I use this shimmering yellow colour for the inner corner of the eye and both eyelids.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

This one is a very beautiful eyeshadow, I think it’s something like terracotta or bronze, and I use it for the remaining part of the upper eyelid.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

And then I apply some dark-brown eyeshadow above the crease line and on the outer corner of the eyelid.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Next I make a rather thick (but still not perfectly even!) line with black liquid eyeliner (it’s some old one I have, but it’s definitely more black than my usual one).

???????????????????????????????

I don’t want the makeup to be too heavy, so I leave the lower eyelid as it is, no pencil or eyeshadow is needed. A little bit of mascara is applied to finish off.

???????????????????????????????

Finally it’s time to colour the lips. This colour in the picture would have been ideal, but for some reason on the lips it looks more like a balm, adding shimmer but not much colour.

???????????????????????????????

So on top of it I add some of this bronze lip colour. Much better now!

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

And that’s how I look today! Actually, it’s the first time I’m going to wear the ‘challenge’ makeup when I go out! So I am really pleased that it looks pretty neat and the colours suit me.

Day 26 – Inspired by Tutorial

ruflag

First of all, I have to admit missing a day. But I had good reasons for that, so I am not too ashamed of myself.

???????????????????????????????

As for today’s challenge, my first thought was to find a video tutorial and follow the steps mentioned there. But as I searched for one I came across this picture here, and thought that it was exactly what I needed!

18-Beautiful-Eye-Makeup-Tutorials-14

I do my face makeup as usual. It’s a great one and I don’t see the point of deviating from it unless I absolutely need to.

Then I can move to the eyes. The first and probably the most tricky bit are the eyebrows. I use some brown eyeliner from the Dior palette to draw a similar shape as in the tutorial, only with much less success. The lines don’t look near as nice and even (I guess, this is due to my virtually nonexistent drawing skills in general) and also my actual eyebrows are so dark and dense that they show through. I don’t think it would be noticeable in the final picture, but still I wish I could do better!

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Next I cover the mobile lid and most of the area above it with this light-brown eyeshadow, which is serving as a base colour.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

I apply some shimmering white eyeshadow right under the brow arch and also above the inner half of the eyebrow.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Now it’s time to contour the upper eyelid with black eyeliner. Mine draws thicker lines than the one in the tutorial, and there’s pretty much nothing I can do about it.

???????????????????????????????

Then I take an eyepencil and go around the same contour. The pencil line is then smudged and blended very thoroughly.

???????????????????????????????

I add some very dark purple eyeshadow around the black area. The colour turns out a bit too intense, compared to the tutorial.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

And then some pink colour for the outer part of the black area. I blend all the colours very well, so that the their border lines are not really visible.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

The upper eyelid is then covered with this shimmering light-blue colour.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

It’s time to refresh the existing contours and add new ones. I use the black eyeliner over the eyelashes and over the eyeliner contour drawn at one of the previous steps. Then I use the eyepencil for the waterline.

???????????????????????????????

Finally I apply the light-blue eyeshadow on the lower eyelid and finish the eye makeup with some mascara on the upper and lower lashes.

???????????????????????????????

For the lips I only use MaxFactor’s Silk Gloss, as I don’t want them to be bright at all.

???????????????????????????????

And done! This turns out to be a really interesting one, primarily due to the eyebrows. It’s fascinating how the shape of those can change the whole face – I can hardly recognise myself! Coming to the makeup itself, I am still not really good at sharp even lines, mine end up being somewhat sloppy. Need to practice more!

Day 25 – Inspired by Celeb

ruflag

After today’s post one might definitely think that I’m a crazy fan of Milla Jovovich, which I am not.

???????????????????????????????

Well, I do quite like her and definitely think that she is a beautiful woman. But it’s just that I came across this photo of her yesterday, while searching for L’Oreal adverts with her, and totally loved the look. So that’s what I’m going to do today.

Milla-Jovovich-para-LOreal-Paris

I start with my usual face makeup – there’s no need to bronze or highlight the skin here.

Then I do the eyes. I cover the upper eyelid with this colour which I cannot properly identify – is it brown? Or grey? Or taupe?

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

With another similar colour (honestly, so similar that I can’t even tell if it’s lighter or darker!) I draw an arch above the crease, with its start and end points coinciding with those of the eyelid. Then I fill the arch in with the same colour.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????  ???????????????????????????????

Then I draw on my eyeliner over the eyelashes. The line is not too thick, but should be quite visible.

???????????????????????????????

I use an eyepencil on the waterline, and the smudge it with a brush.

???????????????????????????????

On top of that smudged line I apply some more of the weird-coloured eyeshadow with a really thin brush.

???????????????????????????????

Then I apply black mascara and the eyes are ready.

???????????????????????????????

As I always do before applying red lipstick, I take my red lip pencil and try to contour the lips properly – something I always have problems with. This time it looks more or less fine.

???????????????????????????????

And some lip colour finally. It’s really dark red, only it shows differently in the picture.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

So this is how it looks like. The lip colour still looks lighter in the picture, and that’s why it doesn’t seem to match Milla’s lipstick (which it shouldn’t match with 100% precision anyway, should it?). I like the look, I think this combination of colours is quite my thing.

Day 24 – Inspired by Brand

ruflag

I didn’t have to think a lot about this one – the brand whose adverts in magazines I have always liked the most is definitely L’Oreal. Now, quite ironically, I don’t own a single L’Oreal product at the moment, but that’s going to make it even more interesting – after all, what would be the challenge, if I had all the exact products as those in the adverts?

???????????????????????????????

The makeup idea I chose is based on this advert with Milla Jovovich, primarily because it’s quite different from most of the previous ones in terms of not being heavy on the eyes.

loreal

I start with applying foundation for a smoother skin with a more even tone. No pancake-face this time, looks like by trial and error I learned to measure out the stuff correctly.

???????????????????????????????

Then comes the compact powder – again in the right amount so it doesn’t get cakey.

???????????????????????????????

Milla’s face looks rather tanned in the picture, so I also apply some bronzer in the usual areas: temples and under cheekbones.

???????????????????????????????

Shimmering pink blush is applied as a next step.

???????????????????????????????

There is this shimmering white lip colour in my palette, for whatever reason (I can’t even imagine how it is supposed to look on the lips!) and I figured out that it can be very well used as a highlighter, a much better alternative than eyeshadow, while I am being too lazy (and greedy) to buy a proper highlighter! So I’m applying it with my fingers on the cheekbones, the nose tip, the forehead and the centre of the chin.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Next comes the easy eye makeup. First I take an eyeshadow of something like a violet blue colour and apply it on the inner part of the upper eyelid. I use really little of it, so that it looks almost transparent.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

For the outer part of both the upper and the lower eyelids I use this mint-green colour, again making it transparent.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

What is left? The inner half of the lower eyelid! I use yellow eyeshadow for it. No need to add eyeliner or mascara, this is it.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Now it’s time to do the lips. I don’t have a lipstick of exactly the same magenta colour as Milla’s, but never mind – I start with a dark plum purple colour. It looks way too dark, but that’s not it yet.

 ??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

I then add some shimmering pink colour on top of it.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

As a final touch I apply MaxFactor’s Silk Gloss in 330 Satin Pink – it’s quite old but one of my favourites, so I can’t let go of it.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Now all ready! Verdict: while the eye makeup goes very well with Milla’s green eyes, it doesn’t look as great with my dark brown ones. Not the worst look ever, but I’m not particularly fond of it either.

Day 23 – Inspired by Music Video

ruflag

I am starting this day’s challenge completely unprepared, having absolutely no clue whose and which music video I should be inspired by. I haven’t seen many of the latest music videos, and one thing I know for sure is that I can’t stand most of the modern pop-stars, all those Selena Gomezes, Nicki Minajs, Miley Cyruses and others from the cohort, let alone being inspired by their looks.

???????????????????????????????

After some intense thinking and googling it strikes me that Amy Lee in Evanescence’s Going Under video might be the best choice. I’m definitely inspired!

f729185df272a127f7b91976244d0a7f Evanescence_going_under_wiki

For my face I’m not using any foundation, instead I apply some concealer here and there. Amy Lee’s skin is really pale, plus I’m sure she used products to make it look even paler. Unfortunately, I don’t have anything like that – it would just be too impractical, why would I want to look very pale in real life? As you can see in the picture, my Shu Uemura compact powder has two colours and normally I swipe the brush across both of them, but here I’m using only the lighter one.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Now the eyes – red eyeshadows again! I’m going to use this shimmering pinkish-red colour on the whole mobile eyelid and slightly beyond on the outer part.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Oops, nearly forgot about the eyebrows! I use brown eyeshadows and a small thin brush to fill them in.

???????????????????????????????

Then I take another thin brush and some black eyeshadow and draw a thick flick towards the end of the eyebrow.

???????????????????????????????

I then draw on my eyepencil over the upper eyelashes and connect it with the flick. I make the line thick and rather messy – deliberately! With the brush on the back side of the pencil I smudge the line and the flick as well.

???????????????????????????????

Then I repeat the same thing for my lower eyelid: draw a thick uneven line and smudge it.

???????????????????????????????

Some more eyeshadow of a slightly darker colour is applied to most of the under-brow area.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

As it now looks too pink, I add some properly red colour to the same area, and then apply some mascara. The photo is too blurred, sorry for that.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Finally I colour my lips with this dark purple plum lipstick, applying really little of it, so that the lips look rather dry and not glossy.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Here is the entire look. I’m quite happy with it – I think, I managed to convey the idea and it also looks pretty good on me.

Day 22 – Inspired by Country

ruflag

Another makeup I have been long looking forward to and actually planned a good while ago. I knew it would have to be something Middle Eastern, more precisely, an Arabic makeup. Why Arabic? Well, primarily because I would look quite natural with it, even though I am not Arabic. And the second reason is that years ago, when I was a teenager, I was quite a fan of the Brazilian soap opera O Clone (‘The Clone’) (yes, I know, shame on me, but I did watch soap back then!) and I loved the Arabic makeup of the principal character, but could never manage to do a decent one for myself. So bring it on!

???????????????????????????????

First I do the usual face makeup – the skin has to be smooth and matte but otherwise I don’t think there are any more specific requirements.

The first interesting bit is the eyebrows. I don’t necessarily have to reshape them, but suddenly I feel the urge to try doing so, making them thicker and with a steeper arch. This is done using brown eyeshadow and a black eyepencil. Looks a bit unusual, but not too bad.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then I use a light brown eyeshadow to cover both eyelids.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

I apply some light violet colour on the outer half of the upper eyelid.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then some darker violet eyeshadow is applied on top of the outer part of it.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

And then I use some black eyeshadow on the outermost part of the eyelid. I blend it very thoroughly, so that there are no sharp lines.

???????????????????????????????

Next I take some shimmering white eyeshadow and apply it on the inner half of the top eyelid. I use a fluffy brush to blend the transition line, so that it is really blurred.

???????????????????????????????

The same black eyeshadow is then used for the lower eyelid.

???????????????????????????????

I use the eyepencil for the waterline.

???????????????????????????????

Now comes the most important and challenging part – the eyeliner. I’d say, the eyeliner is the key element of this makeup, so it’s essential to get it right. I draw a very thick line above the eyelashes, with a long pointed flick.

???????????????????????????????

Finally I apply several coats of mascara, and also use the eyepencil again to make sure the whole eye is contoured.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

And finally I colour my lips with my usual natural-looking Shu Uemura lipstick so as not to divert attention from the eyes.

Done! It turned out pretty good, I have to say. Maybe the eyes could look even more defined if I used more black eyeshadow. But what I’m really proud of are my eyeliner skills – they are definitely getting better!

Day 21 – Inspired by Photo

ruflag

I’m stepping into the final phase of the challenge. The last 10 themes seem to be the most interesting and challenging ones.

???????????????????????????????

After looking through loads and loads of photos on the Internet, I found this one here:

makeupforbrowneyes11

The lady’s skin looks pretty smooth, matte and flawless. Her face makeup also looks very similar to my routine, so I stick to it.

Then I do my eyebrows. Their shape is nowhere close to the lady’s eyebrows, but never mind – I guess, there is no point in trying to replicate her eyebrows shape, after all, the makeup is supposed to be inspired by her photo and not to turn me completely into her.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Next I use a bright blue eyeshadow and a flat brush to contour my eye.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

I apply some darker and a slightly different shade of blue to the outer half of that contour.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

Then I use a black eye pencil for the waterline, which is not the easiest thing to do – the pencil just won’t draw on the eyeshadow. As a result, the line looks not as black as it should.

???????????????????????????????

Finally, I apply three coats of mascara and comb the lashes.

???????????????????????????????

I don’t really have such a nude lip colour, like the one the lady is wearing, plus I look better with more pinkish colours, so I choose a very light pink one.

??????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????

And that’s the look. I’m still not entirely happy with the lip colour, as I think it’s just too pale, and also my eyes don’t looks as well-defined as hers – I might have used a blue eyepencil instead of eyeshadows.
